Sadly, this mildly scratchy yarn is the yarn packaged with all Vivian Hoxbro's kits. Nice array of colors, good stitch definition, but it's just not of a softness that I'd recommend for next to the skin.

I've just been using it in a fair isle style buttondown vest and I'm very pleased. Good price. Nice color selection. True, I wouldn't make a camisole out of it, but for sweaters and vests to wear over a turtleneck, I think it's a great choice.

I was at a workshop with Vivian Hoxbro and agree that the new skeins are a bit harsh but I did feel for myself that after the wool is worked (knitted), worn & washed, it softens into a very nice product. I wouldn't be at all afraid of its feel next to the skin.

I've made the small wing shawl from Vivian Hoxbro's Shadow Knitting book. It is absolutely stunning, and it softened quite a bit with washing. I don't think I'd want to wear New England Shetland next to my skin, but then, Vivian's kits are for garments that are not meant to be worn next to the skin. She chose Harrisville, I am told, because of Harrisville mill's depth and variety of color—and their ability to closely replicate dye lots. The colorist on staff is truly an artist, and Harrisville colors are amazingly deep and rich. I will use this yarn again, in a heartbeat, for my fair isle projects, and for more Hoxbro projects in the future.
